Re: Metroid: Other M
No it doesn't tie in with prime rofl
It takes place between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion, let me show the timeline:
Metroid / Metroid Zero Mission
Metroid Prime / Metroid Pinball
Metroid Prime Hunters
Metroid Prime 2
Metroid Prime 3
Metroid 2
Super Metroid
Metroid: Other M
Metroid Fusion
I just realised, it was my 1000th post! Go me

Re: Metroid: Other M
I think people were making ties early on to the Prime games, before it was confirmed to take place between Super and Fusion, because of the first person scheme you can initiate.

Looks real to me. Unless it isn't.
But I've got my copy preordered, tis will be great and I'm sure of it.

From the looks of it, its shaping up to be a cracker that's for sure! I am a little unsure on the controls, I am going to assume they're like Shadow Complex, but i'd prefer a little more aim in them if that was the case..

Yeaaah. But there's a good reason for that. Me and Darren have been working on re-opening Shinesparkers the past month. We've mostly been talking about everything website and Metroid related over Skype.
Believe me, the hype has not died down at all.

Fucking. Love. So, much. Easily my Wii GotY so far, with the only potential competition being Donkey Kong Country Returns in my eyes (Though I could be wrong). I had very little expectations before playing the game, I got it yesterday, completed it today. (I haven't stopped playing >_>) And it just wowed me, amazing gameplay, graphics, beautiful CGI cutscenes.
Re: Metroid: Other M
Pleased to hear you like it Cory, shocked that I haven't had the chance to play it myself yet..
Re: Metroid: Other M
Finally got a Wii for Christmas, along with Donkey Kong Country Returns and both Wii Sports games. DKCR is fun, but I've gotta say it feels too similar to the SNES Donkey Kong Country and the motion controls feel absolutely silly. HOWEVER! The first game I ordered after Christmas was Metroid: Other M, and I've gotta say I think it kicks ass. Not as good as Super Metroid, but I like it better anyway. The movie version is a little goofy, with important gameplay scenes left out and unnecessary action sequences kept in, but eh, it's the game I'm interested in. I beat it a few days ago and now I'm going to work on hard mode. Easily my favorite Metroid, but like I said Super Metroid remains the "definitive" Metroid game.
Um... bump. LOL?

Too similar to the SNES DKC? The complaint was that it was too dissimilar.
Of course it's going to at least be SOMEWHAT similar to DKC. It's based off of it!

Re: Metroid: Other M
I meant too similar as in it doesn't add enough. Almost every gameplay mechanic is recycled from the original; of course a lot of them should be, but I've seen very few new things and even fewer that I might call innovative. It's fun, but it's just not as fun, for me at least. Still a great game though.
Re: Metroid: Other M
Personally, I thought it added in enough new things to still give it the DKC feel.
- Rocket barrel
- Blowing
- Bosses are definitely more dynamic
- Foreground elements
- Time Attack
Just to name a few. I'm not sure what you were exactly looking for when speaking innovative.

Re: Metroid: Other M
The rocket barrel is cool, but it's basically if Retro said "Hey guys, know that Helicopter game online where you hold left click to go up and you go down when you don't hold it and there are obstacles and stuff? We should put that in DKCR, except with enemies too!"
Blowing isn't something I consider all that great, and it's not that big of an addition. It's hardly different from the ground pound; you use it on some enemies because you can't hurt them otherwise, and you use it on certain objects and other such things to yield items or solve "puzzles".
Bosses feature less simple jumping to defeat them, true, but just because they're more dynamic than DKC3 doesn't mean they're dynamic compared to anything else released since Donkey Kong Country 3.
Foreground elements are mostly cosmetic in nature, since they are typically linear. Its biggest effect is that it looks pretty, and when Donkey Kong goes far away he becomes tiny and hard for some of my other family members to see clearly. Of course they have bad eyesight, but they play plenty of other games just fine nonetheless.
Time Attack is nice, but it doesn't change the gameplay too much and it's not a new concept. It can be fun, true, but it doesn't add much.
The biggest change I'd probably like is simultaneous co-op, but I can't try that yet so unfortunately it doesn't factor into my appreciation of the game.
It's still a good game, but I can't think of anything in it that I hadn't seen before in other games.
We should probably move this discussion to a Donkey Kong Country Returns thread, since this is the Metroid: Other M topic. Also, sorry about the length, I have a tendency to ramble or go into unnecessary details.
